The Kanaloas - The Kanaloas Play Quasimoto Stomp! and Other Surf Tunes (Torquay TR-001) ****
This is a splendid four-song ep from The Kanaloas. It's sound is really nice, and the songs are very well arranged and nicely written. I sure hope this means a CD is next!
One thing to note: the label says 45 rpm, but it's pressed at 33-1/3.
Picks: Quasimoto Stomp, Torero, Shark Attack!!, Honey In My Woodie
Track by Track Review
Quasimoto Stomp ****
Surf (Instrumental)
Deluxe shallow island whammy chords, a very cool melody line, great drums, and perfectly supportive bass combine flawlessly in "Quasimoto Stomp." This could easily have originated in 1963, but alas it's an original. Excellent!
Torero ****
Surf (Instrumental)
Slow Spanish chords introduce the song. Its melody is slightly sad and liquid. Double picking and some really warm whammy lines. "Torero" is a splendid track with drama and spunk.
Shark Attack!! ****
Surf (Instrumental)
Dark surf rhythm and circular melody lines, along with glorious chords mysteriously peek out from beneath ominous bass boom for a dangerous sound. While this is somewhat murky sound-wise, it's a superb composition and arrangement.
Honey In My Woodie *****
Surf (Instrumental)
The engine starts, and then the woodie takes off. Lovely muted chords and notes with island whammy chords create a warm holiday atmosphere in which "Honey In My Woodie" just shines. It's a slow number with a very engaging melody and arrangement.
